Design philosophy

I respect the building site’s varying neighborhoods, zoning requirements, slopes, geology, flora, views, sun orientation, and climate. I respect and welcome the client’s ideas, needs and wishes, but always bring them back to reality, practicality and the budget. I believe in designs that are timeless in their beauty like a simple bit of Egyptian jewelry or a water worn piece of driftwood. I believe that beauty is attained through truth in the use of materials, proportion, and respect for the shapes that surround them and forces bind them. Buildings and the spaces within should be arranged logically so that structures grace a landscape or enhance a neighborhood rather than infringe upon it. Floor plans are open for comfortable, natural living. Windows are placed and grouped for views while privacy and climate control is maintained. I believe that the kitchen should be located to be open to living areas and views, while not infringing. I believe that a design scheme may contain many variations, but always must remain true to it’s central idea like a great musical score, or the crystalline structure of a snowflake.
